Agricultural sites we plan to visit:

  • APPRESID conference in Rosario, Argentina. Sustainable cropping conference for whole of South America. There will be a side program to visit vineyards region and other rural villages during conference time.
  • La Pampas region of Argentina where farmers raise beef on good soil and high rainfall.
  • Uruguay, a beef and wheat country.
  • Parana state of Southern Brazil where no-tillage researchers Dirceu Gassen and Ademir Caligeri will entertain us with their current research projects.
  • Goias/Mato Grosso states of Northern Brazil. View the diversity of crops in new land opened up 15 years ago.
  • Potato research centre in Peru.

Tourist and cultural sites we plan to visit:

  • View Empanada (Argentinian pastry) being made
  • Dance the Tango in Buenos Aires
  • Spectacular Iguassu falls.
  • Brasilia, capital city of Brazil
  • Morning river cruise in Amazon basin, Peru
  • Machu Picchu, home of the Incas
  • Cusco, full of medieval history as well as Indian sites.
Please Note:
This is a DRAFT program, there will be many other attractions added in when program is finalised later this year. This program is subject to date of AAPRESID congress 2016 which has not been advertised yet, dates when researchers are available to meet with us, and flight availabilities.

Accommodation will be in 3, 4 and 5 star hotels. 3 star in the rural areas, 4–5 star in the major cities.

Expected dates: First 3 weeks in August 2016.


  1. Fly Australia to Buenos Aires (likely carrier is Air NZ with stopover in Auckland). Transfer to hotel. Free time.
  2. City walking tour Buenos Aires including watching and sampling empanada pastries. Driving down the widest avenue in the world. Dinner and Tango show.
  3. Catch fast ferry to Uruguay in morning. Visit medieval town Colonia del Sacramento and stay overnight.
  4. Ferry back to Buenos Aires in morning. Bus south west to La Pampas region of Argentina then north west to Pergamino.
  5. Visit beef and wheat farmer in high rainfall area between Pergamino and Rosario. Register for conference.
  6. AAPRESID conference for men. Women's day out on Parana river cruise in morning, visit national park in afternoon. Rosario overnight.
  7. Bus to Cordoba, view rich Agricultural land on way. View Argentina's 2nd most populous province.
  8. Free day in Cordoba or visit winery at Colonia Coroya and historic Jesuit mission return to Cordoba for evening.
  9. Fly Cordoba to Foz de Iguazu (Argentina side of falls), board tourist train and walk around Argentinian side of falls.
  10. Bus from Foz de Iguazu to Londrina, Brazil, 600km, viewing farmland along the way.
  11. Visit Ademir Calegeri (no-till researcher), and pioneer no-till farmers. Ladies program: visit Botanic gardens, Igapo Lake and Catuai shopping centre.
  12. Fly Londrina to Sao Paulo to Brasilia, captial of Brazil. Check into hotel then free time.
  13. Travel to EMBRAPA Research centre and one farmer. Ladies visit Pirenopolis for the day. Great shopping and craft area.
  14. Fly Brasilia to Manaus. Eco-River cruise on the upper Amazon river.
  15. Manaus free day suggestions: native tribes’ museum, eco-tours, visit local tribe.
  16. Fly Manaus to Lima. Arrive late afternoon. Free time to explore Mira Flores suburb shopping and restaurants.
  17. Fly Lima to Cusco. Visit to Textile museum, local markets for llama product bargains, and an Inca Indian historic site.
  18. Catch morning train to Aguas Calientes (closest town to Machu Picchu). Check in and buffet lunch in Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, afternoon tour of Machu Picchu.
  19. Morning free time to walk around Machu Picchu site/visit museum/explore Aguas Calientes. Afternoon train to Cusco
  20. Visit another Inca Indian historic site and catch afternoon flight to Lima. Farewell dinner in Lima.
  21. Those travelling to Galapagos islands fly Lima to Ecuador whilst those travelling back to Australia fly Lima to Buenos Aires to Australia.

South America August 2016


Cost is likely to be $15,000 per person. This price will be finalised once the airlines have advertised airfares for next August.

5 day add-on trip to Galapagos Islands 26–30 August 2016

Fly to Ecuador then out to Galapagos Islands to view 100 year old tortoises, a newly formed island with no plant life, Galapagos birdlife such as the blue footed Booby, and the Marine Iguana that swims.

Accommodation will be on a 20 person luxury yacht* in double cabins and ensuites. All meals included, transfers to and from Galapagos airports included. A bilingual naturalist guide will be with you for the entire cruise. Access to 4 islands in the Galapagos archipelago. 4 Regional flights included.

* First yacht has been fully booked. Second yacht still has cabins available.
